Review of Oliver! (1968) by Calvin C — 30 Dec 2012
Best Picture winner of 1968, I didn't have high expectations for this, and yet it is one of the more entertaining musicals I have seen. Some songs are actually recognizable and the music and dancing are top notch. Ron Moody, Jack Wild, and Shani Wallis are great and Oliver Reed is just plain evil. He really scared me and made me fear for Oliver's life. Mark Lester as Oliver is good, though the supporting cast is what really makes the picture. The climax ia rather dark and a bit disturbing, but that is what made the story work. It looks like a light-hearted muiscal from the outside, but it soon becomes a story about survival, charity, and family. A nice little surprise and worthy of its numerous Oscars.
Grade: A-.
