Review of Oldboy (2013) by Ryan C — 13 Feb 2014
Supposed edgy director Spike Lee takes Oldboy, some of the edgiest source material one could hope for, and somehow makes it feel like a generic, flavourless Hollywood remake. I don't know how he manages it, but every scene seems like a rushed or watered down version of the original, best summed up when the protagonist dumbly stares at a squid in a tank at a restaurant rather than ravenously biting its head off.
A remarkable achievement, really.
