Review of Oldboy (2013) by Zachary N — 27 Aug 2014
The film replaces the abstract resonating theme exploration that made the original so unique and effective by streamlining everything; a tighter plot that, while more realistic in ways, dissuades revisiting, bad foreshadowing for those who've seen the original (not to mention blunts the point behind the original's iconic twist), and disappointingly shallow characters.
By all accounts, a better remake than most, but only because it's so familiar and not because it tried to be innovative.
