Review of Oldboy (2013) by Razif O — 16 Feb 2014
It's unfortunate that the most impressive part of this remake is Josh Brolin's physical transformation from flabby to carved out of stone. Otherwise, the performances, pacing and atmosphere pale in comparison to the original, and there is little that defines this virtually pointless remake as anything but a typical Hollywood cash-in.
A lot of Brolin's more impassioned scenes are almost laughable and the flashback scenes are particularly corny. This kind of mediocrity is surprising coming from Spike Lee, indeed.
