Review of Oldboy (2003) by Stephen E — 28 Jun 2012
It's easy to see why "Oldboy" has such a large following. Few films are made with same kind of kinetic filmmaking exuberance, so it's no wonder why people have become fascinated by it.
I'm no detractor; it's a fabulous piece of cinema, and much of its greatness is owed to the remarkable, electrifying direction of Chan Wook Park. He never lets the film slow down, always keeping the hits and twists coming at a rapid, almost brutal pace.
The visuals are so stylish and stunning and well-choreographed that you overlook the dull moments and inconsistencies, which are far and few between. Min-sik Choi's performance is what carries the film on an emotional level, and it's interesting to see how deft he is at switching between being over-the-top and utterly serious.
Overall, "Oldboy" is one hell of a film; a riveting experience that lives up to the expectations set by its fans.
