Review of Oldboy (2003) by Lee V — 31 May 2013
Great movie!!! Definitely deserved the Cannes award. The way the movie is shot allows the viewer to experience the confusion, frustration and anger of Dae-Su as he tries to unravel the mysterious reason for his imprisonment.
Although there are torture scenes, they're not too graphic and even the action scenes are poetically shot. One of the fight scenes, where he fights multiple men, seems more like choreography then a brutal gang fight.
The ending is disturbing, not what I was expecting at all and leaves you feeling sorry for Dae-Su but wanting him to triumph in the end. Also, rent the subtitled version, it's way more authentic than the corny-sounding dialogue of the dubbed version.
