Review of Oldboy (2003) by Justin T — 02 Apr 2013
I have mixed feelings about this South Korean film. At first the plot seems to be nothing new: the main character wants revenge, pretty much. But through several twists and revelations, we eventually discover that the protagonist is actually the victim of an even bigger vengeance plot.
Oldboy is a brutal, beautiful, and brave movie that boasts a surprisingly groovy soundtrack. Unfortunately, it is also rather pretentious and confused. With all its overblown violence and ridiculous plot points, the meaning of this film was lost on me.
I don't mind violence, but I do object when it's used for no clear purpose other than shock value.
