Review of Oldboy (2003) by Dylan A — 24 Jun 2013
What title is best to give it Oldboy? A brilliant South Korean film? Yes, but its also much more. A masterful piece of Asian cinema? Yes, but still more. Perhaps the most apt title is that it is an exemplar of the revenge genre.
Shocking, horrifying, brutal, visceral, and intriguing Oldboy is an expertly acted and masterfully directed odyssey of vengeance that spans decades and entire lives. If you have the stomach for the physical and psychological anguish it presents then Oldboy is unmissable.
How the forthcoming American remake will be able to reach this high benchmark is, right now, unfathomable.
