Review of Oldboy (2003) by Chris B — 16 Aug 2013
Oldboy, the 2005 Korean cult hit, certainly has a bunch of great action and twists. When the lead character is held in captivity for 15 years without knowing who is holding, he is suddenly released and has only five days to find out why.
The premise has genuine intrigue, and the movie holds that secret from you until the very end. There are several times that my jaw dropped when finding parts of information out, it was that involving.
The movie does have some pacing problems, and some characters aren't very well fleshed out, but those who need to be are, so it doesn't hurt the picture overall. I can highly recommend this one, because the American remake is coming out in the next year, and this one is definitely worth seeing in its original format.
If you like foreign films or mysteries, give this one a shot. Just beware a few gross out moments!
