Review of Oldboy (2003) by Tyler E — 02 Jul 2015
I love Park Chan-wook's entire Vengeance Trilogy. This is my favorite film of the three. I had the pleasure of seeing it almost two years before it was officially released in the US. It was one of the rare moments when my idea of what Film Art could be was challenged and heightened.
The last time I had seen a film that so captured my imagination and admiration was in 1986 when I first saw BLUE VELVET. This was a game-changer for Film Art that has not yet been fully articulated. Fellow cinephiles will discover a number of "clues" that also make Oldboy a sort of homage to number of fantastic filmmakers.
This is a cinematic masterpiece. And Chan-wook Park found a whole new way to raise the bar on the "Action/Adventure" Movie Genre. Min-Ski Choi's greatest moment thus far! -- And, this is a film actor who has enjoyed a number of amazing cinematic moments.
