Review of Oldboy (2003) by Jonathan H — 05 Oct 2015
Delightfully sickening, masterfully directed and flawlessly acted, Oldboy solidifies itself as a breathtaking masterpiece, and one of the greatest revenge flicks of all time. This film will make you vomit your fried dumplings and feel somehow connected to E.O. Wilson's fascination. No single element of human emotion is absent in Min-sik's legendary performance. Complemented by two terrific supporting cast performances, he carries a film weighing far more than should be humanly bearable.
In an age dominated by over-complicated hyper-scored Tarantino-esque mosh pits of stereotypical revenge films, the taboo is made common practice in Chan-Wook's greatest film. Twisted to the core, Oldboy questions its viewer's perception of wrong, revenge, morality, and predetermined assumptions about the revenge genre.
