Review of Oldboy (2003) by Alec L — 20 Dec 2015
I have to say that I'm not as big on this film as a lot of others, as its gained itself a large reputation among a lot of people. Though I enjoyed the Oedipus plot, not only was it a bit muddled but it just doesn't work in the modern world.
Why would Oh Dae Su be so ashamed of sleeping with his daughter if he didn't know? Why would the antagonist (whose name escapes me) be so driven by such a ridiculous concept as Oh Dae Su accidentally starting a rumor that led to his sister's suicide?
I just don't see the motivation.
The direction and acting were both excellent, and the ax seen, while impressive technically, just doesn't seem to carry as much weight when directors have done the same for 50 years now.
