Review of Old School (2003) by Daniel B — 11 May 2010
Will Ferrell isn't funny. I know this is a controversial statement. I'm about to get even more controversial. Anchorman was shit. There I said it.
I can't think of one funny movie where Will Ferrell has played the lead role. Although it would be unfair to call anything he's made a 'movie' because this to me implies something that at least attempts to work on an intellectual level, no matter how small.
Sometimes I go to bed at night and I cry. I cry because Will Ferrell has a career. As I sob I scream "WHY? WHHHHHY?!" I ask myself how it even got to a point where he could have a career. A career happens over a long period of time, over a number of jobs. How did he get to his second job? How?
Now I know what the majority of "my" generation would say. (I say "my" because I disassociate myself from you) They'd say "urgh, Dan, you're so serious, you've got no sense of humour, Will Ferrell is hilarious." You'd be partly right, I have no sense of humour. I laugh very rarely nowadays (because the majority of films released involve Will Ferrell...). But how would me having a sense of humour allow me to find Will Ferrell acting drunk and running down the street naked a funny situation?
Would having a sense of humour suddenly turn Old School into a meaningful film? Would I all of a sudden notice that Will Ferrell is actually subtly witty and not just a dude that shouts random things loudly at inappropriate moments? Would I laugh? No. I would not. I would just continue to cry.
