Review of Old School (2003) by Matthew B — 07 May 2013
Old School reminds me of a straight-to-television film I would see on Comedy Central. Unfortunately, just like most of those movies, it's pretty much terrible.
When Mitch (Luke Wilson) returns home early from a business trip, he discovers his wife cheating on him in a sexual escapade. With the help of his buddies Beanie (Vince Vaughn) and Frank (Will Ferrell), Mitch rents a house near a college campus. After a wild housewarming party, the college dean (Jeremy Piven) arranges for the house to be zoned into a student housing district. To counter this act, Beanie and Frank form a fraternity, making Mitch's house the headquarters.
Luke Wilson is one of the least funny actors I have ever seen. Why he is continuously cast in comedy roles, I have no idea. In all honesty, I think the same of Vince Vaughn and Will Ferrell. Their brand of humor has never really appealed to me and this film is no exception. I'll truly never understand why the majority of people think these guys are comedic geniuses. In addition to the lack of funniness, the movie as a whole just feels cheap and generic. I think some of the direct-to-video American Pie sequels might top this.
Anytime I am trying to critique a comedy film, I base most of my thoughts on how funny I think the movie is. I literally laughed ONE time during the entire viewing, and that came right at the beginning. For most of the 90 minute duration, I was left wondering why I was wasting my time with this disaster. 1 star.
