Review of Old Partner (2009) by Jeff B — 10 Apr 2009
Different Korean documentary about an old farmer, his wife, and a very old ox. The old man has a close relationship with the ox, it's basically like a son to him, but the ox is a so old, it's amazing that it can still do so much farm work.
As I was watching this I was thinking, "how did the director get the idea to film this random family and their ox?", because it's basically 90 minutes of the wife complaining to her husband to get rid of the ox and that he loves it more than he loves her, with the husband just yelling back at her saying that he'll never sell it.
The two bickering with each other is funny to watch. Plus there are some excellent shots, particulary a moment when the man is walking his ox around sunset, the land is all in blackness with the sky lit up by the sunset, it's pretty amazing.
And the ending is extremely well done and touching. A real find.
