Review of Old Joy (2006) by Dave C — 30 Jan 2008
I'm rather split over this one. Although you can read a lot between the lines, this really isn't about much except a couple of now distant guys going on a trip. Nothing more dramatic, amusing, or poingient than that would be in anyone's life.
It feels very real, and of course that's where the subtext comes in, as any two people doing anything in real life can have subtext, but is it enough to really be cinema?
Grab an old friend and go for a walk in the woods and you'll have a much richer experience yourself, but at least this is the closest you'll get on film.
