My movie buff friend and I like to take in films knowing as little about them beforehand as we can. To that end, we have seen the good, the bad, and the indifferent. From the opening scenes of Old Fashioned, we knew we were in for a quality film. The cinematography is breathtaking, flawless filming of the most beautiful country in Ohio. I love where I live now in Idaho, but this film makes me miss living in Ohio!! Like I was saying, we knew we were in for a quality production visually. But it is the characters which captured my interest as they were introduced. The chemistry between Clay and Amber is immediate, but also grows. These are no one dimensional caricatures. Their struggles are familiar and poignant. Their friends are an awfully lot like friends we've dealt with. But the surprising part of this film is the JOY. My movie pal and I didn't know we were seeing a film which included the dimension of our spiritual life (we all have that dimension like it or not). I wish more films showed the real life struggling of this very real part of our humanity with the humor, grace, and depth that Old Fashioned shows! Nothing about faith is ham- fisted, no cultures of peoples are alienated, and no one is painted as perfect. But there is that Joy! I can't recommend this film highly enough! It is insightful, refreshing, funny, and entertaining. Pass it on!
