Review of Old Dogs (2009) by Tina G — 16 Aug 2010
My expectations started at rock bottom, but as I watched this atrocity twitching on the screen I found myself looking for an even deeper place to hide. The film relies on archive sound effects and potty jokes for both its humor and its heart; it's as if director Walt Becker thought he might be able to gain his audience's sympathy as long as his screen farts were loud enough.
Plot points are injected at the story's convenience; Williams and Travolta get into a fight midway through the movie, and then Travolta's dog dies- it would have been a more tragic touch had we realized he had one.
Even appearances by Bernie Mac and Matt Dillon, along with a mildly funny one by Justin Long, can't save this mess from self-destruction right on screen.
