Review of Old Dogs (2009) by Mush H — 24 Mar 2011
Directed by National Lampoon's Van Wilder (2002) and Wild Hogs (2007) helmer Walt Becker, this is a very silly film but it is quite amusing. Despite the criticism, it harks back to alot of family comedies of the 1980's and 90's, it also has a very likeable pairing at it's core.
It has best friends Dan Rayburn (Robin Williams) and Charlie Reed (John Travolta), who have been friends since the 1970's, who are now co-heads of a successful sports marketing company, and about to close the biggest deal of a lifetime with a Japanese company, that'll take up alot of their time.
However, there's a little problem, while on a drunken bender in Miami years previously, Dan ended up getting married to Vicki (Kelly Preston), although the marriage didn't last that long. However, she turns up out of the blue with her children, twins Zach (Conner Rayburn) and Emily (Ella Bleu Travolta), who turn out to be Dan's.
Vicki is facing jail for her part as an environmental activist, so she leaves the kids with Dan, who is clueless on how to look after children, but Charlie is on hand to help. However, the kids prove a match for them, and they get in the way of the Japanese deal.
This is a film which is going to go down as a guilty pleasure, it's not perfect and it has it's flaws, but it does have some laughs, and a good cast including the late Bernie Mac, Matt Dillon, Ann-Margret, Luis Guzmán, Justin Long and Seth Green getting man-handled by a gorilla.
Which is worth seeing the film for. :P.
