Review of Okja (2017) by Chucho F — 08 Jul 2017
I finally took the time to watch Okja. I honestly have to say that I haven't been this greatly moved by film in a long time now. For it is as poignant as it is real. I hear a lot of people calling it a pro-vegan movie and nothing more. I say yes, but it is more than that. It's a story about love, friendship, and respect that happens to be about an animal. Okja is a fictional character, but it represents the countless animals across the world that everyday are violently robbed of their lives for commercialization and human consumption in an age where animal product is no longer vital to our survival. Okja is also a fucking great movie! Beautifully written and directed by the master filmmaker Joon-ho Bong. Definitely a movie that will be remembered for years to come.
Thank you to Netflix, too, for being bold enough to tell such an imperative story for our time and giving the subject of animal cruelty a platform of epic proportions. So go watch Okja now!
