Review of Okja (2017) by Jon C — 16 Jul 2017
Way too much political discussions but the center of the film is still this young Korean girl and her large miracle pig.
10 years these creatures were discovered by Tilda Swinton, head of an eco-friendly, pro-animal conglomerate but there may be more to the story than the general public is led to believe.
Jake Gylenhaal plays an animal expert with a wacky side of interacting with these creatures.
Okja is taken away from this girl to America and she begins a desperate attempt to find him and bring him back home.
Along the way she meets the AFL (Animal Liberation Front) whose job is to save abused animals from the ignorant, passiveness of the government, two members are played by Lily Collins and Paul Dano.
It is mainly about the girl and her animal trying to reunite but the horrible truth of this conglomerate's plan with Okja is fully realized.
The film is somewhat overly-political and can drag down the movie but it hits a lot of great points as far as preserving our economy as well as our food supply.
Can we make animals big enough to feed everyone? is it our right to do so? without regards to the animals themselves is it more important to save face and make a quick buck?
It applies to any living creature in slaughterhouses and ending world hunger.
What's more morally sound?
A lot of the film is a tough watch considering the harsh subject matter it tackles but it has some great ambition.
I expected a bit more though.
