Review of Okja (2017) by Erick F — 01 Sep 2017
Debated as a NetFlix movie but is nothing less of a great flick presented trough the company. Okja is a super pig, a new breed that has been created by humans. They planted ten piglets around the globe, made their owners feed and raise them just to come collect them later. Okja is living in South Korea. She is chilling in a mountain area, filled with food and green nature. Okja and her owner Mija, are also best friends, so she is naturally not happy when she is taken away from her. Mija decides to find her and bring her back home. This is not an easy task as Lucy Mirando and her company have big plans of making food out of the animal - the greatest tasting meat on the market.
This is a very interesting film. It takes up many big things about the food industry and the battles here are many. Meat versus veganism and friends over money are the biggest ones. It works fine, even if this probably is the biggest non-documentary "everyone should go vegan"-film to date. Extremely engaging and a lovely production. Joon-ho Bong is showing off some great animation in the great style of "The Host". It's easy to put the films up against each other as they are filled with humor, smart turns, action and fantasy.
This film is the best of them for me, since it's taking up an important matter presented in such a delicate, stylish and action filled way.
A great casting with faces like Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Giancarlo Esposito, Paul Dano and the lovely Lily Collins. Superb acting by the mentioned, but Seo-Hyun Ahn as Mija really shines here.
So, a very rewarding film, made directly accessible to everyone with NetFlix. A smart move from NetFlix, a smart film for the audiences.
8.5 out of 10 golden pigs.
