Review of Okja (2017) by Jak-Luke S — 23 Jul 2017
It's clear that the social commentary is at the forefront of Joon-ho Bong's film, yet it's not the key component of making the film itself work, it's actually Bong's direction that makes this film a masterpiece in its own right.
The blend between cultures of west and east has been difficult within the context of cinema, with John Woo and even Ang Lee in westernised cinema, yet Bong transcends this issue with a blast of counter culture that focuses on such a real and traumatising issue, as well as his use of camera and storytelling that's both engaging and emotional.
Performances are excellent Dano and Swinton in-particularly standout with charisma and depth but it's Seo-Hyun Ahn who steals the show, with range far beyond her years.
