Review of Okja (2017) by Jesus C — 27 Jun 2017
Based on its great first 10 minutes, I expected an amazing view on the hypocrisy of saving world hunger by killing innocent animals...and boy was I wrong. As soon as the Americans get the focus, they ruined my expectations with clique characters/villains and moral stories, and mediocre writing and acting.
It's obvious that the director doesn't know how Americans act or talk which makes a big waste of such a great cast. When you focus on the Koreans, it's the best part of the film. You can feel the emotions, they act like people, and it's great writing.
There's even great satire on society, and you even get great cinematography. Why couldn't the film just focus on these characters only? The film is at its strongest in the beginning and the end, but the rest is disappointing because the Americans take up the majority of screen time in that section.
If they would've gotten a second director that knows how Americans act, the biggest problem would be fixed. The film had chances to become though provoking, but misses them with the clique "American Corporations are Bad" story.
It's a shame to see such a great concept fall flat like this.
