Review of Offside (2006) by Jon P — 14 May 2012
Part character-driven comedy and part political protest, Panahi's 2006 Silver Bear winner is clever, funny and wonderfully insightful. The Iranian auteur's new-found satirical style renders 'Offside' much more accessible and engaging than many of his more sluggish, depressing dramas; with its pacing bang on-target and its characters unusually feisty and interesting.
Panahi's courage and subtlety are impossible not to admire and this ballsy sports drama is a real eye-opener; equally as entertaining as it is enlightening.
