Review of Office Space (1999) by Diego T — 19 Feb 2013
Let me begin by saying that Office Space should be recognized as one of the funniest movies ever made. It is quotable, well-acted, and occasionally (sometimes unintentionally) inspirational. That said, this could have gone completely wrong. Mike Judge could have turned it into another gross-out R-rated dumbass comedy like Tim and Eric's Billion-Dollar Movie and gotten shitty reviews. But in the capable hands of its fantastic actors, Office Space soars.
Not many people will agree with me when I say that this is more than just a comedy. Not to sound like a hoity-toity liberal art critic, but this is a masterpiece of the human condition. The insufferable boss, the astoundingly stupid coworkers-- this is a movie that should hit a little too close to home for all the office drones in cubicles working a 12-hour-day.
Although its central premise (hypnosis) seems a little ridiculous, Office Space never truly goes off the rails. It's quiet, calm, cool, and collected. And no one has the right to say anything different about it.
