Review of Office Space (1992) by Rainer K — 11 Jun 2012
Office Space has many fans and cult followers and like with so many of these cult films I can't exactly understand why.
Yes, it has its moments, and yes, the balance of witty one-liners and sophisticated jokes is quite remarkable but these characters are as shallow as their work and while I didn't hate them like they hate their work I also didn't care much about them.
I also found the straightforward and sometimes even monotonous style quite boring... and montonous and yet I'm aware that's intentional there must be a better way to present this film.
Moreover, I foresaw the ending already in the early phases of the movie, that's not a bad thing per se but given the fact that it kinda heavily relies on its final twist - it is.
Regarding all the bad things I just wrote about it, you could wonder why I give it still 6/10 - actually, it's even a pretty high 6 - well, it has its moments and though it didn't made me laugh out loud all the time (not the type of film anyways) it made me smirk and giggle on numerous occasions. Also, the gangsta music featured in some scenes gave the film a hilarious self-awareness which most similar movies lack.
