Review of Office Christmas Party (2016) by Mike B — 14 Dec 2016
I'm somewhat surprised at all the bad reviews, honestly I think it's because most people expect to much from it. We live in a time where there truly isn't much that can be called original or hasn't been done before as far as movies ESPECIALLY comedies go, and most comedies nowadays are pretty similar (at least the ones like this, their not supposed to be blockbuster life changing movies) their truly made almost as fillers between those.
And Office Christmas Party in that respect had alot more genuinely funny moments than most other comedies in the same genre, the kind of in your face absurd movies that swing for the fences of raunchy to get laughs.
Also as I said before it's very hard to be original these days in terms of R rated comedies, but if you have quick whit and know your reference jokes this hits spot on almost every sentence. Most of the reviews I'm seeing are mostly negative towards the spotty plot, but again these movies aren't being made to win an Oscar or have the best plot their just to make you laugh for 90-120 minutes and give you some comedic relief during your day.
Another thing I've noticed is mentioning that the laughs arent constant, but really no movie is unending from start to finish hysterical laughter. It's got enough laughs that your going to be either giggling or full on laughing out loud every 10-20 seconds which is more than enough to warrant a watch, even a second or third watch to pickup the quick witted one liners and references you didn't first time around.
I've always been a huge fan of T.J. Miller, I'm glad he's being cast more often because he is always a guaranteed laugh. Bateman as well is usually pretty funny even if he has literally played the exact same character in every single movie he's ever been in.
Rob Corddry is flat out hilarious in everything, he should have had more screen time in this. Kate McKinnon personally I'm not much of a fan, she's great at impressions (if the impression is the same extremely weird painfully awkward version of that person) and can give some very awkward laughs but after seeing the same thing every time it begins to get stale.
That's one thing I really enjoy about Corddry and Miller and even Bateman is that in comedies like this their characters are usually very very similar but it never gets old because their able to keep you laughing.
As for Jennifer Aniston she played the villain almost in this one, which isn't as easy to make the audience laugh as but still she brings a spot on delivery to it that even when she's being a total B**** it makes you laugh because of how mean it is.
All in all its a very funny movie, lots of genuine laugh out loud moments some almost crying laughing (especially if you understand the references, I think alot of times people don't which ruins amazing lines) that will give you some much needed comedic relief during its runtime.
Sure it's predictable and its plot isn't amazing but let's be honest if that's what your really looking for why are you going to see an R rated comedy? This is definitely a Friday or any night with your friends or girlfriend movie, with some great cast members who bring some seriously funny moments and a very good time.
I definitely recommend if your not looking for anything serious and just want to take it for what it is, a raunchy obscene hilarious movie that will make you keep laughing throughout, even during the credits (if you have a sense of humor that is).
