Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by Ola S — 28 Jan 2011
It's quite amazing how a movie audience can sit absolutely quiet for two hours, listening to religious speculations from eight monks. But it's true, it did.
This happend in reality. A Catholic monastery in Algeria during the 1990s, is threatened by Islamic fundamentalists during this very turbulent era in Algerian history. Shall the monks escape or shall they stay and help their peaceful Muslim neighbors in the village? They decide to stay and seven of them gets murdered.
The big tension here lies between the daily life and a slowly growing fear. That theme is just too well-known from horror movies, but here it's anything but meaningless so called entertainment. Can and shall you oppose violence by your example, even to the limit of sacrificing yourself? It's a real question here. Not a simple film trick.
