Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by Ken T — 27 Feb 2011
Several monks live in the Atlas Mountains of Northern Africa in the 1990s. They help the people of the community, most notably Brother Luc who provides much needed medical care. The monks, led by Brother Christian also meet up and talk with the Muslim brothers - Christian himself is seen studying the Koran.
Then there is a massacre of Croatian workers by Islamic extremists. The French consulate wants the monks to leave. But the people in the area do depend on these men and they must test themselves if they should go.
Of Gods and Men does something so few films about monks have done. It presents them as men with real emotion and understanding; not the usual utterly pious characatures. These men feel fear and question if by staying is seeking martyrdom.
The extremists are shown to be intelligent individuals as well. This is a thoroughly examined film that will certainly enlighten audiences about the religion of Islam. It is a masterful parable to those of us who live in a Christian world but have our own notions about the Islamic religion.
An important and incredible film.
