I think this is a truly beautiful movie. The very fact that it was a huge public success in France proves that, because it's a slow, contemplative movie, the kind that usually get critical acclaim but little interest from the masses.

This one is so good that it also charmed the public. The acting is wonderful, Lonsdale and Wilson in particular. The characters really ring true, they look and sound like real people, yet at the same time they are impressive because they are both simple and heroic.

I am not a believer at all, I was not brought up with any religious education, and yet I am moved by their love of mankind and the incredible strength they find in their determination to stick to their beliefs.

The film is very subtle and well-made, it takes you through their interior journey, their doubts, their fears, and their ultimate resolution not to run away and to stand up for their ideals. I also loved how it portrayed the interaction between them and the people living around the monastery.

The contrast between the peaceful atmosphere of the monastery and the turmoil outside was also beautifully rendered.
