Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by Jonathan R — 04 Mar 2011
This is a powerful and deeply spiritual film. Its meditations on the meaning of life through faith when faced by the imminence of death are simple and strong. It contains a compelling and sympathetic view of monasticism and Christian life, presented austerely with simple camera work and the chants of the liturgy as the film's breathing score.
At the heart of the movie's meditation is the meaning of Christ's Incarnation, and so this movie about Cistercian martyrs is at heart more essentially a Christmas movie than It's a Wonderful Life.
