Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by Alex C — 29 Mar 2011
This is an honest, poetic film about how eight French Christian monks work and live in an unstable region in Northern Africa, as political unrest and terrorist activity increases. The monks begin to question whether its safe to stay or should they leave for their own safety.
The performances are strong, particularly that of Lambert Wilson, the head monk. And I love the scene where the monks hear a military helicopter hovering outside their monastery, and they hold each other in prayer thinking it might be the end this time.
My biggest issue with the film though is that it really moves very slowly. I just felt there could have been a little more tension built up, just to hold my interest better.
