Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by Wilfredo R — 01 May 2011
Screw you, special effects. Screw you, CGI. Screw you, 3D. Screw you, Hollywood and big budgets and over-paid actors. This is what cinema is all about. It moves you, you feel it in your bones. The scene where the monks were sitting and listening to "Swan Lake" is by far one of the most touching and intense movie scenes I've seen the last few years.
Fantastic, absolutely brilliant performances from everyone. Simple and stunning. I was really worried this would be another pro-Catholic propaganda, but it was not. This movie focuses on humanity, on kindness and love - and how truly powerful those. It can be very slow and tranquil, especially the first half, but that doesn't lessen the intensity of the overall film.
