Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by Derek T — 08 May 2011
Of Gods and Men is a beautiful film that tells the story of monks in Northern Africa who lived within a Muslim community and how they reacted to the threat of extremist Islamic terrorists in their area.
It is a pensive, pondering movie that allows for personal reflection and wider philosophical debate on how to determine the will of God and how to respond to violence. The story is genuinely inspirational, and the way in which director Beauvois frames the film allows the viewer to see how the different characters struggle through the situation, without resorting to villefying the Muslim culture.
It is a film of hope, pain, community, faith, and joy, and one of the most meaningful films I have seen in a long time.
