Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by Elio V — 13 May 2011
The film steps in to speak for these monks to the secular world, trying to make us understand why they chose to remain and continue their good works in a situation nearly certain to lead them to death.
The tension of their situation builds through the film, balanced with scenes of the monks together in contemplative worship in their monastery. The film naturally romanticizes the monks to some extent, but also shows them sometimes fearful, clashing, and enduring the dark night of the soul.
