Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by Paul M — 24 May 2011
There was much general shock among people when the assassination of these monks hit the news media, during my stay in France, May 1996. I never expected such as widespread reaction in a society that has a secular rather than religious ethos.
Of Gods and Men, brilliantly depicts the spiritual tranquility, and peace among the monks of this Trappist monastery, especially after they decided to remain in Algeria, rather than flee to France at the behest of local government officials.
Winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes 2010, and France's entry as the best foreign language film, Academy Awards 2011.
