Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by Seena F — 19 Jun 2011
The vibe that you get from the beginning until the end is so quiet and patient that you felt like you were in the monastery yourself. Most viewers will definitely find this boring and unappreciative, but Of Gods and Men has a lot of depth and is more electrifying than ten action movies combined.
It is shot like a documentary, panning back and forth from the monks doing their usual routines to them making important decisions on whether or not it is safe to stay where they are. It's beautiful, poetic, and certainly not boring to watch.
Of Gods and Men tried to stay clear of the melodrama and focused itself on the realistic situation that these men had to endure (and that's more breathtaking than anything else.) Try to stay away from this if you get distracted easily with the praying/singing/church rituals, otherwise this is great French cinema.
