Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by Derek H — 10 Aug 2011
A film cannot be anymore subtle than this. Especially one depicting monk actions taken in cause of a terrorist threat in Algeria. It's more concerned with method and daily routine of these monks and their style/way of living than with anything else. And how their course of action doesn't and shouldn't change depending fully upon their faith and in some cases with some of the monks, recovering it.
It's a hard bargain for viewers to appreciate, like, or even respect what they're doing in spite of what's happening around them. But that's the point of the movie. No theatrics. No drama. Simply what would these monks have done. It's hard to relate to dealing with this fact. Nevertheless, it was the still the right angle to take for this film. Even if the angle doesn't end up being perfect.
