Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by David M — 19 Aug 2011
Des Hommes et des Dieux is the story of French Christian monks that lived in harmony with Muslim brothers and among the Muslim population in the Algerian mountains. Then seven of them were kidnapped, brutalized and assassinated by fundamentalists in 1996 during the Algerian Civil War.
The film reminds that at its truest practice, faith is about stepping outside of one's self and caring for your fellow man no matter what the personal consequences. It also shows how faith can be manipulated and perverted into something violent and vile. It's impossible to watch this film and not be moved by the kindness, bravery and conviction of its characters in the face of the very worst in humanity. This film will resonate with you long after viewing it.
