Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by Bernard J — 25 Aug 2011
OGAM is a very nice film, set in Algeria it follows the story of 8 monks living happily among the locals, making jam, healing the sick and going about their business.
Then a bunch of fundamentalist nutjobs turn up on the scene and start causing problems, much of the film is then spent watching what the monks will do - should they stay or should they go?
In the end they all stay and it doesnt take a genius to work out whats going to happen.
For a grim premise there is surprising humour in this film. The French is very eloquently spoken and easy to follow even if your subtitles go tits up half way through the film, as mine did. I still followed the majority of the plot, or I thought I did anyway.
The acting is great, especially from the overly expressive old dudes like the doctor who was a James Bond baddie once I think.
Liked this film, not one of the films of the year but it was very good.
