Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by Katie B — 12 Oct 2011
The best movie I've seen in the recent parade of soupy, critically-acclaimed disasters that I've subjected myself to in the name of high art. But. It really is such a beautiful movie that so exquisitely asks the question: what lays in the heart of every man, and what will be revealed when we pass beyond the veil and see each other as God sees us? An interesting flourish in this film is how Beauvois uses the simple monastic prayers to draw parallels and convey meaning, sort of like Terrence Malick does in The Tree of Life.
Perfect. Be warned: you may find yourself to be a victim of the Frere Jacques Effect: not only wishing you were a monk, but a French monk at that. *Sigh...*.
