Review of Odd Thomas (2013) by Kevin R — 08 May 2014
I do lead an unusual life.
Odd Thomas is a young man with a strange power to see super natural elements. His soul mate, Stormy, keeps him grounded and his anxiety levels low. They live together in a small California desert town named Pico Mundo. When the number of super natural elements mysteriously rises in his town, he puts his life on the line to save his family and friends.
"You know why I call you pooh bear?".
"Because I'm so cuddly?".
"Because his head is filled with stuffin.".
Stephen Sommers, director of The Mummy, Van Helsing, The Mummy Returns, Deep Rising, G.I. Joe Rise of the Cobra, and the upcoming When Worlds Collide, delivers Odd Thomas. The storyline for this film was interesting and reminded me of Constantine. The characters were interesting but the script was robotic and a bit stale. The cast delivers mediocre performances and includes Willem Dafoe, Anton Yelchin, Addison Timlin, Leonor Varela, and Casey Messer.
"The dead don't talk.".
Odd Thomas was a recent addition to Netflix that we decided to give a shot. Based on the cover I thought it would be more of a zombie flick, but it turned into a Constantine mixed with Sixth Sense. The film wasn't as "fresh" feeling as Sommers may have been going for, but it was an entertaining picture in a poor man's Harry Potter/Percy Jackson kind of way.
"Where you live I flourish.".
Grade: C+.
