Review of Oculus (2014) by Nathan G — 03 Jan 2016
Something that seems to be missing from many recent "Haunted Object" movies are rules. I love a good ghost/object story and am willing and able to suspend disbelief, but without any rules regarding how their powers work and what their restriction/weakness is, the object becomes all-powerful and unbeatable, so why invest emotionally in the 'heroes' when they have no chance of success? Plus the why/how this object exists in a supposedly rational world is such an important storytelling point that gets completely ignored.
All powerful evil objects with no weakness is the laziest horror story these days, covered up by creepy yet pointless effects, just so the ending is 'edgy' when the 'heroes' lose. Lazy storytelling, the unforgivable sin.
