Review of Octopussy (1983) by Jean-Paul S — 31 Aug 2010
After a string of lackluster Bond films (Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only), Octopussy is a return to good, not great form, in somewhat of the tradition of Live and Let Die. Moore is still far too old here, but this flaw is lessened by the reappearance of Maud Adams (who sizzled with Moore in The Man with the Golden Gun) as the regal Octopussy.
Louis Jourdan (though one must wonder what Alain Delon could have done with this role) is magnificent as the elegantly baleful Kamal Kahn, and Steven Berkoff (a shamefully underappreciated character actor) is delightfully megalomaniacal as General Orlov.
The Rita Coolidge theme song and Robert Brown's rather dry M are weak points in the best Bond film of the 1980s.
