Review of Octopussy (1983) by Duncan W — 16 Sep 2008
"james bond hits an all time LOW in octopussy!" well that's what the trailer should have said. it's true that after watching this recently it isn't QUITE as bad as I rememberered there are a lot of flaws in this the waekest of all canon bond films.
when the film is bening BOND it's actually rather good, when it's trying to be ROGER MOORE's bond then it's like a bad car crash. roger moore is lookin his age and seems to talk to himself life a senile old duff.
"hiss off!" he tells a snake crawling on his leg... why? who quips with snakes? and as for "sit!" who outside the UK in the early/mid eighties is goin to get that?( i'll forgive the tarzan moment as to be fair chewie did the same in retutn of the jedi) louis jordan as an afghan? why is Q out in the field where he shouldn't be? and the plot meanders so much I thought i'd dropped off during the 1st indian section fo the film as I remembered a showdown in the palace only for them to return there for no real reason after germany! hey? WTF? thankfully Bond will never be this atrocious again.
on the plus side whilst the theme tune sucks balls (apart from the Jarvis coker version on dave arnold project) Barry's score is perhaps the best thing about this film :).
