Review of Octopussy (1983) by Jeremy B — 16 Nov 2008
After getting off to a slow start, this film really comes alive in its second hour with a brilliantly choreographed action sequence on a speeding train, a frantic race to stop a nuclear bomb from going off at a circus (don't ask me how the plot gets there, but it makes sense in context), and a terrific battle on an airplane wing.
Louis Jourdan is wonderfully oily as the evil Kamal Khan and is probably the best Bond villain of the 80s. I love, love, love Octopussy's athletic henchwomen, who are not above putting on wonder-woman spandex outfits to defend their.
.um..mistress. When they open a can of whoop-ass on some of Kamal's men late in the film, the results are so gloriously amazing that I can't even begin to describe them. Ultimately, this film has such a good-natured sense of humor about itself that I can't help liking it, even though it is no more coherent than Diamonds Are Forever or Moonraker.
