Review of Octopussy (1983) by Etienne B — 12 Dec 2010
Octopussy(1983)-10/10...the 13th James Bond film and Roger Moore's 6th is one of my favorites because it is so much fun fom beginning to end. The film was directed by John Glen, with the title song "All Time High" (also one of my favorites) was sung by Rita Coolidge. The opening scene is one of the all time greats with Bond in a tiny airplane eluding a missile and using it to destroy a hanger which he attempted to blow up...the explosion of the hanger is just awesome! Bond this time is up against jewelry smugglers headed by title star Octopussy played by Maud Adams, who had the distinction of appearing as Scaramanga's lover Miss. Anders in The Man with the Golden Gun. He also has to deal with Khamal Khan played b Louis Jordan and a Russian general named Orlov played by Stephen Berkoff, who plan to detinate a nuclear bomb on a US Air Force base in West Germany leaving European borders open for attack. Along with the opening scene other great scenes include the auction at Sotherby's with the faberge egg, Bond playing backgammon against Khan, Bond being chased in the streets of Dehli in a buggy, and one of my all time favorite scenes when Bond disarms the bomb at a circus plus the ending fight at Khan's palace and the subsequent fight on the airplane. There is more I could add...but like I said this is an exciting, fast paced Bond film from start to finish that has other great Bond touches like Vijay(played by tennis pro Vijay Armitraj)...he plays an Indian agent and tennis plyer who helps Bond...I love it when he is playing Bond's theme as a snake charmer.
"Reginald Bundy...critic for the times.".
