Review of Octopussy (1983) by Kris K — 29 Dec 2008
While most critics and Bond fans prefer Connery over Moore as a rule, and while the scripts of the Moore films show a general shift away from the fundamentals that made movies like Goldfinger or Thunderball successful, there's also a tendency to dismiss certain Bond outings on sight based on who is in the role of 007.
Octopussy is one of Moore's stronger outings as 007, and does a good job of blending all of the elements that made Bond into a very watchable movie. Exotic locations? Check. Outlandish villains? Check.
Beautiful Bond babe? Check. Well done action sequences? Check. The only thing Octopussy is really lacking is the truly memorable villain. Kamal Khan is interesting and very serpentile, but not quite on the same level as the Goldfingers or Oddjobs of the past, though his henchman serves the part well.
The plot itself is somewhat convoluted, but ignoring that this is one of the better of the Moore Bond movies.
