Review of Ocean's Eleven (1960) by Christian C — 16 Nov 2010
(This review is for the original 1960 film).
Lewis Milestone's original Ocean's Eleven is not as good as Steven Soderbergh's remake, this movie makes a perfect example in why we need remakes. The first hour of Ocean's Eleven is slow, many of the scenes were irrelevant, we didn't memorize the characters' faces quickly, because of lack of background and often switching of scenes, the characters were handed to us sluggishly, there is no unique difference in each character. The heist which should be the big factor was poorly detailed, there are a lot of questions that weren't answered, there are a lot of holes as compared to the remake. The heist itself was impossible, robbing five Casinos in one night is a hell of an idea, they didn't even show us a more comprehensive look into it. The character named Spyros Acebos played by a Russian actor Akim Tamiroff is annoying as hell, and that won't make this movie funny. The ending is different than the remake. Well, the ending is right for both movies, and maybe the clever ending had saved this movie from being a complete disaster, with an all-star cast. Well, it wasn't made in the 60s to be a great movie, it was meant to be cool. Soderbergh made it great and cool.
